Most of humans are, of course me too, have egoistic attitude towards all aspects of our lives. Shifting to the universal and altruistic attitude requires practice and letting go our ego. Many social activities are manifestation of such a practice. You won’t be able to change your point of view and your ego in one night, it requires gradual practices.

Conflicts are clash of egos. I don’t know whether conflicts are still there or not if we all able to rejoice to other’s joy. But I have deep confidence that at least the will be less conflicts exist.

When we all have such an attitude? Will we start? Why don’t we start small by each of ourselves first? Will you?

She was planned to get her wedding next month. Yesterday, one of her best friend — let’s call her S — asked her to talk. She thought S wanted to have a regular girls chit chat but she was wrong.

S said to her in desperation that S is pregnant — S wasn’t married. S said she was pregnant her-husband-to-be’s child. Let me clear this, S was having sex with her-husband-to-be and S is pregnant now. She said she was shocked and together they went to the her-husband-to-be’s apartment to clear things out.

Things went complicated. S is her best friend, she was devastated that her-husband-to-be having affair with her best friend all these time. He said he clicked just right with S after a year ago she introduced S to him.

She doesn’t want S to undergo an abortion and yet her marriage is just within a month with all preparations and invitations worked out. What would you do if you were in her position?

After I get in the bus, there were only 3 passengers in it. There was and old lady sat in front of me. The moment I saw her, my first impression was she was a typical bad tempered old lady. No trace of smile or warmth on her face.

I won’t tell all the passengers in or out the bus, not all of them catch my attention back there.

There was a well dressed man stopped the bus in the middle of the street. Funny thing is, it’s just 10 meters from the real bus stop. He was busy making calls while get into the bus. That’s enough to label him an arrogant.

In next 10 meters on the actual bus stop, one family catch my attention. An Indonesian native carrying her 2 years old daughter with a maid and her husband, a Korean man. She sat on the opposite side of me. Then the maid follow. The maid sat just between she and old lady. There was only small opening between them but the maid just squeezing in between. The maid pushed the old lady with her body. It was many clear space on the other side of the lady. The maid just plain ignorant.

I thought the old lady will be irritated by the maid. But I’m wrong, she just move nicely without showing any emotion at all. The moment later her husband sat next to the old lady so he was separated from her wife and the maid by the old lady. He sat on the old lady’s her hand. The old lady pull her hand and still without any expression and the man say nothing. That’s not enough, after that the man reach to his daughter that was on her wife’s lap. The old lady was pushed back. And without any expression at all *again*.

As we can see, I judged the old lady that she is bad tempered. The fact is very contrary. She is not bad tempered and very patience too. Remember the well dressed man? Actually he was not arrogant at all, he even greet us while he took off the bus. That’s what I call “Don’t judge a book by its cover”.

Those white collar workers are educated workers, I believe most of them have degrees from reputable university. You know, attitude and education are not always aligned. They may have good education but attitude and discipline are not.

After we get our foods, we try to find a good spot to sit. We found a spot next to the way in that not too crowded and hot since air circulations are better. It’s an open air cafeteria. We were eating peacefully until a man sat on the opposite side of the long table.

He start to light his cigarette immediately. I know it’s open air but, he didn’t even care whether people around him will be bothered or not by the smoke. Oh yes, it’s in the middle while we having our lunch.

It’s been deeply rooted in our culture, toleration value, but not in good sense. We tolerate when they smoke BUT they never tolerate to non smoker around him. I don’t know what inside their mind, doesn’t know or doesn’t care to non smoker.

It’s common secret in Indonesia, law enforcement is not being upheld strictly and consistently. Not long ago the government just issue new law to prohibit to smoke in public places. The “echo” was sustained for weeks only. After that, it’s just like the law never existed before. Pathetic isn’t it?

We can’t count on the awareness to make the smoker care nor the law for now. We should educate children, the next generation to have the awareness and discipline. Even though the result is not immediately but in the long run the result will be solid. Let’s learn from Singapore, they take generations to educate citizen to have discipline, until the old generations are “phased out”.

In this case, I can get angry and furious to the smoker but that won’t make things better. I chose to tell the world to be aware. Would you take your part?
